BEAUTIFUL - THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL - Catch Up Review

GIG: Beautiful - The Carole King Musical
DATE: Tuesday 10th February 2015
VENUE: Aldwych Theatre, 49 Aldwych, London
COST: £57.50
OUR VERDICT: Really Beautiful

We were delighted to get tickets for the very first London performance of this hit Broadway musical. The show tells the story of New York's Brill Building in the 60's where the song writing factory of Gerry Goffin and Carole King gave the world some of the finest songs ever heard. The show is filled to the brim with their collaborations and those of Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and you really don't appreciate just how much they wrote, until you see this show.

The show is not just about the music though, it tells the story of the Goffin/King relationship (he was a jerk), their divorce and ending with Carole's move to the West Coast and the start of her solo career as a singer in her own right.

The actress (Katy Brayben) who plays Carole has her spot on - her voice, her look. In fact the whole cast (some playing multiple characters) are really brilliant, and a special shout out to The Drfiters.... they made us all laugh. The sets are not complicated and change with ease, making the whole show flow.

We think we will be back to see this show again, and again, and again.

The show opens with Carole at this piano
